Colonel Bob Simpson was born in Munich, Germany. He is married to the former Antonija Pocrnja. He has two children, Robbie and Sarah.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages from the Virginia Military Institute graduating in 1978. He earned a Masters of Strategic Studies from the US Army War College in 2003.
COL Simpson was commissioned Regular Army Infantry from VMI and served 14 years on active duty. His active duty assignments include leadership of an airborne rifle platoon and Redeye platoon in 1st-509th Airborne Battalion Combat Team and command of 3 companies; HHD Hohenfels Training Area; C Company, 1-46 Infantry, 1st Armored Division and C Company, 2-504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division as well as Commandant of the 82nd Airborne Division Advanced Airborne School. COL Simpson?s previous assignments in the Virginia National Guard include: XO, 1st BN 183rd Infantry; Commander 1st BN, 170th Infantry; Commander, 29th Division Rear Operation Center and Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Training, HQ STARC.
Prior to assuming command of 1st Brigade, COL Simpson was called to active duty as Special Assistant to the Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic and Commander in Chief US Joint Forces Command. His awards include: Defense Meritorious Service Medal, 5 Meritorious Service Medals, 2 Army Commendation Medals, Joint Service Achievement Medal, 2 Army Achievement Medal, 2 National Defense Service Medal, Multinational Force and Observers Medal, Virginia National Guard Bronze Star Medal, and Virginia National Guard Commendation Medal.
