?The Stonewall Brigade? Citizen Soldier Center
"Preserving the Legacy of the Citizen Soldier"
Current plans are to locate the museum on the grounds of the Frontier Culture Museum at the intersection of US 250 and I-81 and near the intersection of I-81 and I-64 in Staunton, Virginia. Currently, some 350,000 visitors pass through the grounds of the Frontier Culture Museum each year. There are some 50,000 vehicles which pass by Staunton daily on I-81 and we can expect that to increase. Within sight of the interstate, our facility will share the easy access from that highway with the Frontier Culture Museum and the US 250 business corridor.
This location has the added advantage for the traveler of being only 35 miles north of Lexington, Virginia and the Stonewall Jackson House Museum, as well as the world famous Virginia Military Institute and George C. Marshall Library. Only 45 miles north is the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park and just 45 minutes to the east is Charlottesville, Virginia and its many attractions including the University of Virginia, Monticello, and Michie Tavern. Also, we are only 78 miles (about 2¼ hours drive) from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia and the beautiful Canaan Valley of West Virginia.
Also important, there are several quality restaurants within 1 mile of the museum grounds and also several good motels.
In a working partnership with the Frontier Culture Museum and a local development consortium, we will at first be located in 8,000 square feet of a planned information center which will also house an IMAX Theater, restaurant, and gift shops. The exterior façade of our portion of the building will be evocative of a 1930s era National Guard Armory. We envision this facility housing the 116th Infantry Regiment Museum, the Captain Randolph Porterfield Hart Memorial Library, a small gift shop at the ticket counter, and offices for the 116th Infantry Regiment Foundation, Inc. and the 116th Infantry Regiment ?The Stonewall Brigade? (USARS). ?The Stonewall Brigade? Citizen Soldier Center will endeavor to promote and support education and research on the contributions of the Citizen Soldier in defense of the nation and in support of the community. We will seek to do this through a multi-echelon approach of museum displays of artifacts telling the story of the citizen soldier through the eyes of the Augusta County Regiment (later ?The Stonewall Brigade?), providing research and educational materials through the Captain Randolph Porterfield Hart Memorial Library, sponsorship of living history activities on the grounds of the Frontier Culture Museum, scholarships for students in an educational endeavor supporting our goals, and support of the 116th Infantry Regiment (USARS) and related units of the Virginia Army National Guard.
Later, as funds permit, we hope to pursue construction of the facility illustrated below.

Having approximately 30,000 square feet under roof, this $4.6-$5.25 million building was to be located on 5 acres on the grounds of the Frontier Culture Museum near the intersection of US Route 250 and Interstate 81 in Staunton, Virginia. Near the entrance to the Frontier Culture Museum, our museum will overlook the reenactment field and house a library, conference room and conservation area in addition to the museum.
